Modern Comfort Meets Classic Muscle: Air Conditioning Installation in a 1968 Camaro
There's something special about driving a classic American muscle car. The sound, the styling, and the connection to automotive history create an experience that modern vehicles simply can't replicate.
However, one area where many classic vehicles fall short is cabin comfort.
Recently, our team at Driven Automotive had the opportunity to improve the drivability and comfort of a stunning 1968 Camaro by installing a complete climate control system, transforming the vehicle from a fair-weather cruiser into a car that can be enjoyed year-round.
The Challenge
When the Camaro arrived at our workshop, it wasn't just lacking air conditioning—it had no functioning heater connected at all.
While this is common in many classic vehicle projects, it can significantly limit the usability of the vehicle. Cold winter mornings, unexpected weather changes, and windscreen fogging can quickly take the enjoyment out of driving even the most iconic muscle cars.
The goal was clear:
-
Install a modern heating and cooling system.
-
Maintain the classic appearance of the interior.
-
Retain as many factory features as possible.
Modern Heating and Cooling Performance
The completed installation gives the Camaro powerful cabin airflow, effective heating, and beautifully cold air conditioning.
Airflow can be directed where it's needed through:
-
Centre dash vents for maximum cabin cooling.
-
Floor vents for comfortable heating.
-
Windscreen defog vents for improved visibility and safety.
-
Multiple airflow combinations for year-round comfort.
-
The high-capacity blower fan creates strong airflow throughout the interior, helping the system quickly achieve the chosen temperature regardless of outside temperature.
Improved Safety and Everyday Usability
While air conditioning is often viewed as a luxury in classic vehicles, a properly functioning climate control system provides several benefits.
Effective windscreen demisting and defogging improves visibility in changing weather conditions, while cabin heating makes winter driving significantly more comfortable. During summer, cold air conditioning helps reduce driver fatigue and makes long-distance cruising far more enjoyable.
These improvements mean the Camaro can spend less time parked in the garage and more time being driven and enjoyed year round!
